The Hubble Constant from (CLASS) Gravitational Lenses

چکیده
One of the main objectives of the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) collaboration has been to find gravitational lens (GL) systems at radio wavelengths that are suitable for the determination of time delays between image pairs. The survey is now near completion and at least 18 GL systems have been found. Here, I will discuss our efforts to measure time delays from several of these systems with the ultimate aim of constraining the Hubble Constant (H0). Thus far three CLASS GL systems (i.e. B0218+357, B1600+434 and B1608+656) have yielded measurements of time delays, from which values of H0≈60–70 km s−1 Mpc−1 have been estimated. Although most GL systems give similar values of H0, statistical and systematic uncertainties are still considerable. To reduce these uncertainties, I will shortly mention two monitoring programs that we are undertaking to (re)measure time delays in 15 CLASS GL systems and address several important issues for the near future.

In cold dark matter models, a galaxy's dark matter halo is more spatially extended than its stars. However, even though the five well-constrained gravitational lenses with time delay measurements must have similar dark matter distributions, reconciling the Hubble constant estimated from their time delays with local estimates is possible only if that dark matter distribution is as compact as the...
متن کاملModeling Galaxy Lenses
In order to use a gravitational lens to measure the Hubble constant accurately, it is necessary to derive a reliable model of the lens surface potential. If the analysis is restricted to the locations and magnifications of point images, the derived Hubble constant depends upon the class of mass models used to fit the data. However, when there is extended emission from an Einstein ring, it may b...
متن کاملScaling the universe: gravitational lenses and the Hubble constant.
Gravitational lenses, besides being interesting in their own right, have been demonstrated to be suitable as "gravitational standard rulers" for the measurement of the rate of expansion of the Universe (Ho), as well as to constrain the values of the cosmological parameters such as Omegao and Lambdao that control the evolution of the volume of the Universe with cosmic time.
متن کاملA New Estimate of the Hubble Time with Improved Modeling of Gravitational Lenses
This paper examines free-form modeling of gravitational lenses using Bayesian ensembles of pixelated mass maps. The priors and algorithms from previous work are clarified and significant technical improvements are made. Lens reconstruction and Hubble Time recovery are tested using mock data from simple analytic models and recent galaxy-formation simulations. Finally, using published data, the H...

Standard 0 = 1 cold dark matter (CDM) needs 0:27 < 8 < 0:63 (2 ) to t the observed number of large separation lenses, and the constraint is nearly independent of H0 = 100h 1 km s 1 Mpc . This range is strongly inconsistent with the COBE estimate of 8 = (2:8 0:2)h. Tilting the primordial spectrum / k n from n = 1 to 0:3 < n < 0:7, using an e ective Hubble constant of 0:15 < = h < 0:30, or reduci...
